Set in an imaginary Italian city, Santo Stefano sul Tuscio. Fiammetta, a street girl, sells her matches on a bitterly cold Christmas eve. On her journey she encounters both good and evil; friendship and malice. As the night draws in, she is left with nothing but a few last matches to keep her warm. The little match girl is caught out by the freezing cold, but the spirit of her beloved Grandmother appears and guides Fiammetta up through the stars, where she can look upon the earth from the distant shining moon.
